Project Description

Project Management Office (PMO) Accomplishment

Project: VRM Project

Scope: PMO Lead

PMO successfully integrated the construction, installation, and operational commissioning of Shah Cement’s record-setting OK 84-6 Vertical Roller Mill (VRM) facility. Managed end-to-end by the Project Management Office (PMO) in coordination with OEM engineering leads from FLSmidth (Denmark), the project was delivered on schedule, within budgetary constraints, and compliant with international safety and quality benchmarks.

The facility officially set a Guinness World Record as the largest single vertical roller mill for cement grinding in the world, expanding plant grinding capacity by 15,000 metric tons per day (6 million metric tons annually).

Major PMO Accomplishments & Milestones
Engineering & Logistics Orchestration
  • Heavy-Lift Logistics Management: Coordinated transshipment and inland waterway transport along the Shitalakshya and Dhaleshwari rivers to transport oversized mechanical components (8.08m grinding table components, 6x heavy rollers, and drive systems) directly to the Muktarpur plant site.

  • Civil & Structural Delivery: Overseen deep-foundation piling and high-load foundation casting engineered to support extreme dynamic forces generated by a 6-roller grinding structure.

Procurement & Quality Management
  • Multi-Vendor Coordination: Managed concurrent integration schedules between FLSmidth (main VRM system), Starlinger (Austrian bagging automation), and local auxiliary infrastructure contractors.

  • QMS Integration: Established quality verification protocols aligned with ISO 9001 and internal strength-testing specs for Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and Portland Composite Cement (PCC) outputs.

Automation & Commissioning Execution
  • AI & Automated Control Center Integration: Executed system integration for PLC-based centralized automation, enabling real-time thermal monitoring, vibration checks, and automatic roller pressure adjustments.

  • Power Grid Interfacing: Successfully synchronized the mill drive infrastructure with Shah Cement’s captive power grid to ensure uninterrupted power delivery.

Operational & Strategic Impact
  • Capacity Expansion: Single-unit addition increased total plant capacity to 10 Million Metric Tons per annum, solidifying Shah Cement’s position as Bangladesh’s largest single-site manufacturing plant.

  • Sustainability & Energy Efficiency: The VRM installation reduced power consumption per ton of cement produced compared to conventional ball mill systems, aligning with corporate environmental mandates.

  • Infrastructure Support Capability: Expanded capacity directly supports supply guarantees for major national mega-projects, including the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal Power Station.
